Born in August 1894 in Orissa, Shri V.V. Giri studied at the University of Dublin. He was a lawyer, a trade union leader and freedom fighter. He was a Member of Parliament from 1952-1957 and served as the Cabinet Minister for Labour. He was also the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore before becoming the Vice- President of India in 1967. He succeeded Dr. Zakir Hussain after his demise in the office as the President of India from 1969-1974. Shri V.V. Giri died on June 24, 1980.
In a subdued background of grey walls with a circular pillar and adjoining wall, the book cabinet towards his left looks prominent. The folds of his churidar represent a contrast to his broad construct and legs in slight curve. In a frontal posture wearing black bandhgala, his face and eyes communicate with the observer. A stick carved in twisted pattern is held tightly in his right hand.
N.S. Subbakrishna was born in 1914 and joined the Chamaraja Technical Institute in 1927 to pursue his passion for arts. The Reserve Bank of India selected one of his paintings to be printed on the currency notes of denominations of Rs.100, Rs.10 and Rs. 5. The Rashtrapati Bhavan art collection includes a large number of portraits painted by Subbakrishna.
