Rejoinder to the Media Regarding the Proposed Airport at Amravati in Maharashtra

Rashtrapati Bhavan : 12.12.2007

Reports have appeared in some sections of the media that a new Airport is being built at Amravati in Maharashtra for the convenience of the President, ignoring the interests of the farmers of the Vidarbha region. The reports are factually incorrect and misleading. The proposed new Airport is one of the various initiatives of the Govt. of Maharashtra for the development of Vidarbha region and not aimed at the convenience of the President.

The President is very much concerned about the farmers' issues in the country particularly of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra from where farmers' suicides were reported. The President has already advised the Central Government for an early solution of matters related to debt relief of farmers. The President always insists on giving top priority to the progress and welfare of farmers.
