The President in her condolence letter to Smt. Suraj Kanwar, the wife of the late Vice-President has said, "Shri Shekhawat was a personality who deeply understood the concerns and aspirations of the poorest of the poor. His understanding of the desires of the common man was a result of his experiences early in his life, when due to his father's death, he had to give up his education to support his family. Having began his career as a farmer and later a sub-inspector in the police forces, Shri Shekhawat through his determination rose high in life. Till the end he continued to interact with the people, which he enjoyed doing."
