The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee would be the Chief Guest at a function being held on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons tomorrow (October 1, 2012) at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The function is being organized by HelpAge India, an NGO working for protecting the rights of elderly persons and provides relief to them through various interventions in India.

At the function, the President will confer Awards in various categories like Samson Daniel Award to the School for Highest Contribution, Golden Award to Outstanding Octogenarian, etc. The President will also launch the UNFPA Global Report on Ageing.

Since 1991, October 1st is being observed as International Day of Older Persons across the world. It was designated as International Day of Older Persons on 14 December 1990, by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly.
